"For me, the most important point is to be able to get various insights."
What do you like most about your job and work at AVENCORE?
The variety of projects types and industries. My first project was on a hydrogen production plant, followed by projects on cable harnesses, special machinery, satellites and railway batteries. Besides the different products and industry insights the project type often differs between projects, e.g. Redesign-to-Cost or CAPEX to name just two. For me, this range of topics is what makes working at AVENCORE special, in combination with highly motivates and supportive colleagues.
Also looking back, as a newcomer at AVENCORE, you get the opportunity to work on projects directly from day one and be present at the client at an early stage, which could take much longer in larger consultancies.
"Other consultancies often have an industry or project focus. We are more broadly positioned."
-
In industry, you often have your own area of responsibility and I would miss the variety. In consulting, on the other hand, you get to work on a lot of different topics and get to know a lot of different companies, so you learn quickly. So the main reason why I wanted to work in consulting is the variety of insights and topics.
-
At the end, the decisive factor was that Avencore does not have a specific industry focus. In addition, while redesign-to-cost projects have been a focus in the past, the projects are now covering all aspects of an operational improvement and cost reduction. Other consultancies often have an industry or project focus. We are more broadly positioned.
-
There tends to be no regular process, but you can define certain building blocks that make up a day: meeting preparation, execution, and wrap-up. Often the project team is consulted again and the results and outcomes of the meetings are discussed as part of the preparation and wrap-up phases.
-
Definitely very open and friendly. Whether you are working together on one project or on different projects, you can always reach out and get support when you need it, regardless of hierarchy.
-
In addition to the regular corporate events in Paris and different team events in Germany, the possibility to see a satellite manufacturing in a clean room, was a real highlight. We were able to stand in front of this large system and see how it is assembled. It was really exciting to see how much time and work goes into it.
My tips for students:
-
My studies taught me how to grasp complex issues in a short amount of time, which is very helpful at my job.
I decided to split my industrial engineering program 50:50 in economics and engineering. I am benefiting from it now: On the one hand, I have the technical understanding, but I don't lose sight of the economic efficiency. In our projects, we look for ideas on a technical basis, but then we also have to check what the cost impact of the implementation would be.
-
Being open to different topics is important. This is also a result of the diversity of our projects and industries. You need to be able to think your way into complex problems to gain the required understanding.
You should also be prepared to take on responsibility, for example for appointments and working results. Of course, you'll never be alone, but the longer you're with us, the more responsibility you'll get regarding meetings and results.
-
You should be prepared to approach people. It is often the case that you work with client employees to identify improvement opportunites and asses the potential impact including the definiton of action plans.
In general, however, it is very important to be open for new topics: to have the desire to tackle many exciting topics and understand how different companies work, to take on responsibility, and to achieve a good project result in a team.
